The weather on this Thursday was cold and windy with rain and it was rather dull. The rain was booked into March station at 8:43am and it was not very light. It was December after all!

Its a pity about the two class 47s top and tailing the train. Last year (2010) A4 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley was slipping in the ice and snow (as were normal trains), so they must have though it was going to be just as bad this year and added a second class 47.

This LNER A4 4-6-2 steam locomotive was numbered 4492 and named as 'Dominion of New Zealand', but is in fact LNER A4 Class 4-6-2 number 60019 'Bittern'. This locomotive had been repainted from its BR green to LNER blue as LNER 4492 'Dominion of New Zealand'.The covers or valances as they are called over the wheels' which were fitted to the A4s when new in 1938, have been re-fitted back onto this locomotive. These have a stainless steel trim. The numbers are also in stainless steel.

The valances were removed from all the A4s during the 2nd World War to help fitters get to the motion and to the oiling points behind them, during the black out. They were never put back after the War.

March

March railway station is in the town of March which is in the county of Cambridgeshire in eastern England. The station is 14 miles from Peterborough on the railway line to Ely.

March is in the flat fens, were farming was the main industry till the railway came. The GER railway line ran from Ely to March and then to Peterborough is still open.

There was also a line from St Ives and one to Spalding by the now closed GN&GEJR . There was also a line from Wisbech (the track of which is still in place from March to Wisbech but is not joined to the main network. (This lines may well be come a heritage line or even re-open)

At Whitemoor one of Europe biggest freight marshalling yards was built at March. When this had all but closed, a new NetworkRail Distribution Centre was built on the southern part of the site of of The Old Whitemoor Yard. This was opened in 2004. Whitemoor Prison had been built on the northern part of what was once one of Europe biggest marshalling yards.
