SJ 1928 in Orton Mere Station

SJ class S1 2-6-4T number 1928 which has now been named Alan Gladden. This engine was at the Nene Valley from 1973 to 1989.

Orton Mere station was built by the Nene Valley Railway and had only one platform at first. There is a now a brick station building with a small cafe for tea and ice creams. When the railway first ran a small temporary building was used at first. Orton Mere was the terminus for the Peterborough end of the line for a few years. Engines running round their train and then returning to Wansford. The NVRs Peterborough station was not added till later on. The flyover above the station is for The "Parkway" road bridge which goes over the railway and also the river Nene.

The Nene Valley Railway now (2014) runs from Peterborough to Wansford railway station and then on to Yarwell junction. Wansford Station is on part of the old A1 at Stibbingson and is about 2 miles from the village of Wansford itself. The line is about 7 1/2 miles long. It now has the Fletton Branch which is about another mile and a bit.

This website is Ukrailways1970tilltoday.me.uk  it is a webe site on railways, but it is not just on trains, but all things railways, with photos, which I have taken from the 1970s till now. I take photos of all things railways, steam diesel and electric trains, signal boxes,  any thing that is on the National Rail network, which was BR when I started taken photos or heritage railways like the Nene Valley railway on this page.

Today EWS, East Coast, Central trains and EWS are just some of the names on the trains. The name on the train does not mean, thats whos train it is these days. These names keep changing, but that means I have to keep taking photos. I also take photos of preserved railways with steam diesel and electric trains. There is lots more to add and I keep taking More!
