Wansford signal box and Level crossing

Wansford signal box and gates in 2005

Wansford signal box controls the level crossing gates over what was the A1 or as it was then known "The Great North Road". the signal box was built in 1907 by the London & North Western Railway. The signal box had 60 levers when built. Till 1959 when the A1 was made a dual carriageway every time the gates were closed to road traffic the A1 came to a stand still. That dual carriageway now goes over the Nene Valley railway at the other end of the Wansford station site on a bridge.

There are four gates on this level crossing next to Wansford station they are controlled by a wheel in the signal box. One wonders how long the queue of cars would be if the A1 still used this crossing and what the car and lorry drivers would say when shunting was taking place.

This is last of five pages on the of "Mixture not engines " that are to do with the Nene Valley from when the railway was opened till now.Next The Fletton Branch

This part of the website has a mixture of things that are not engines that are to do with the Nene Valley from when the railway was opened till now.

The Nene Valley Railway now (2014) runs from Peterborough to Wansford railway station and then on to Yarwell junction. Wansford Station is on part of the old A1 at Stibbingson and is about 2 miles from the village of Wansford itself. The line is about 7 1/2 miles long. It now has the Fletton Branch which is about another mile and a bit.

This website is Ukrailways1970tilltoday.me.uk  it is a webe site on railways, but it is not just on trains, but all things railways, with photos, which I have taken from the 1970s till now. I take photos of all things railways, steam diesel and electric trains,  and signal boxes like Wansford signal box on this page any thing that is on the National Rail network, which was BR when I started taken photos.

Today EWS, East Coast, Central trains and EWS are just some of the names on the trains. The name on the train does not mean, thats whos train it is these days. These names keep changing, but that means I have to keep taking photos. I also take photos of preserved railways with steam diesel and electric trains. There is lots more to add and I keep taking More!
