National Express East Coast class 91129 at Kings Cross in 2008

The class 91 was used at this time by NXEC for its ECML services to Scotland and Leeds services with 9 mark 4s and a driving van trailer (DVT) at the London end of the train.

91001 - 91031 were built by BREL at Crewe.

The wheel arrangement is Bo-Bo and the loco weight is 84 tonnes. The class 91s maximum speed is 140 mph but 125mph is its operating speed on the ECML. It is limted to 110 mph with its slab end leading.

The 91/0 was introduced between 1988 and 1991 by BR. Between 2000 and 2002 Bombardier at Doncaster modified the class and it then became became class 91/1.

National Express East Coast (NXEC)

National Express East Coast (NXEC) took over from December 2007, the East Coast rail services from London to Scotland and Leeds that had previously been operated by GNER. It then re-branded the trains as National Express East Coast (NXEC).

National Express East Coast just took off the GNER logo. They put white tape over the red stripe in Kings Cross Station between trains. They also removed the names from the class 91s.

I am pleased I took some photos of National Express East Coast trains at Kings Cross while I could. This ECML railway franchise did not last very long!

From the 14th November 2009, East Coast was the name of the new operating operating company that has took over the running of the ECML, when National Express, that had run National Express East Coast as a subsidiary company, decided it was cheaper to walk away from the franchise, than make a go of it.

Virgin East Coast took over from East Coast and is now itself walking away in 2018.

Kings Cross railway station is one of the main London stations. The station is in the North of London. Trains run from here to the North East via the East Coast Main Line (ECML) to towns like Huntingdon and Peterborough. Then on to Grantham and Newark, Doncaster, York and Durham to Newcastle. Then into Scotland to Edinburgh were trains can go to rest of Scotland including Glasgow and Aberdeen. Trains also go to Cambridge and Leeds
