Class 31s between turns. The class 31s were used on Peterborough and Cambridge trains. The site of this refueling Depot is now a Car park. In steam days Top Shed was the main shed, but this area was used for serving locos between turns to save the trip back to the Top shed. When Top shed closed this depot took over. This depot has now closed.

 

Kings Cross railway station is one of the main London stations. The station is in the North of London. Trains run from here to the North East via the East Coast Main Line (ECML) to towns like Huntingdon and Peterborough. Then on to Grantham and Newark, Doncaster, York and Durham to Newcastle. Then into Scotland to Edinburgh were trains can go to rest of Scotland including Glasgow and Aberdeen. Trains also go to Cambridge and Leeds.

Class 31 261 light engine on a dull day with the blue haze that hung over the Cross in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Most mainline trains were loco hauled and the DMUs and Deltics filled the air with a blue haze.

 

At this time Class 31s were used on the Peterborough and Cambridge trains. The overhead wires did not yet go to Peterborough or Cambridge, when this photo was taken.

A class 47 light engine comes slowly into the platform to back on to its train. Note the head code panel with its unlined up dots. A second man was used in the rear cab to save drivers having to change ends. This helped to speed up the light engine movements.
