Kings Cross with work going on during the week
 
This is Kings Cross with work going on during the week. A class 47 is about to leave on with a down train. Passengers are still using both platforms. Today these piles of rubble would be caged off. These two platforms put out of use and the station might even be closed!

There are two class 47s in Kings Cross station while work to alter the track layout is under way ready for the overhead wires. Today the station would be closed for weeks with buses replacing the trains.
 
This mid week overall photo shows that the west side has already had its track altered but the York road side still has work ongoing with a class 31 on a spoil train. the tunnel to the widen lines can be made out to the left. These photos were taken from a small hole in the wooden fence above the tunnels.

Kings Cross railway station is one of the main London stations. The station is in the North of London. Trains run from here to the North East via the East Coast Main Line (ECML) to towns like Huntingdon and Peterborough. Then on to Grantham and Newark, Doncaster, York and Durham to Newcastle. Then into Scotland to Edinburgh were trains can go to rest of Scotland including Glasgow and Aberdeen. Trains also go to Cambridge and Leeds.

When the first stage of the overhead wires to Royston were in place these class 312 EMUs were used.
 
The then un-restored St Pancras station, which is now the London terminus of High Speed 1 is in the background

The Class 312 were the last class which were built with the Mark 2 body shell with slam doors. The class 312s were built between 1975 and 1978 for outer-suburban passenger services
 
In the 1970s work was being done on King Cross station to alter the track layout at Kings Cross, with station still working as normal. This work was to to alter the track layout ready for the overhead wires. Today the station would be closed for weeks with buses replacing the trains.
