National Track Materials and Recycling Centre
On Sunday the 14th of August 2011 Network's Rails New National Track Materials and Recycling Centre had a open day to mark its opening. This is centre is on just part of the site of the old Whitemoor Marshalling Yard. That yard was once Europe biggest marshalling yard. This yard died in the 1980s and 1990s as local wagon freight often into small wayside stations and sidings disappaered for ever?
Whitemoor Prison was built on some of the land after the GN&GEJR line to Spalding had been closed
2004 saw the opening Network's Rails Distribution Centre in June 2004 which also had a openday.
The new National Track Materials and Recycling Centre is on land which was the old MPD, which has also closed, and just some of the old down yard.
The National Track Materials and Recycling Centre has layed 100s of square feet of concreat to store old track panels ready to be recycled. Old concrete sleepers can be crushed, and the concrete reused, as infill or sold. Used ballast can be washed in a ballast washing plant and can I think can be reused. Even the track clips are saved in bins, 1000s of them.
When you see how big this part is together with the 2004 yard plus the prison you can see just ;how big the old yard was at March.
Both sides above of GBRf class 66720 which was on display at the event.
You may or may not like it, but it is different.
This livery was designed by Emily Goodman, who was only aged six. The livery has a different design on each side.
'Hunslet' class 08401 at the Whitmoor National Track Materials and Recycling Centre open day.
More 12" to the foot scale track panels. They must have a big Model Railway!
