GWR King no.6023 King Edward II

King Edward II at Derham Station

King Edward II at Derham Station on Sunday 17th July in 2011 about to move the ECS into the main platform, from the other platform at Dereham station

This was the Mid-Norfolk Railways first Steam Gala in july 2011. Three steam locomotives were booked to come to the line, and all ran. Much work has gone into making sure water tanks and water cranes and ash pits were all ready for this day.

The GWR King from the Great Western Soctiey. Getting King Edward II was a real bonus for MNR. This newly restored Great Western King class locomotive, had been on the railway since the start June for running in over the MNR's longer run, which Didcot does not have. It is painted in early the British Railways Blue.

Two other steam locomotives were in use Dennis Howells GWR 0-6-0 Pannier tank 9466 now repainted into British Railways black. This steam locomotive is booked for the summer like the last few years

There was also the Great Central Railways 3f 0-6-0 side tank no.47406 that had come for just this Gala weekend at the MNR.

The weather was not kind, with very heavy rain on most of the Saturday and Sunday. It was fine on the Sunday morning for the first few trains but got wetter as the day went on but the trains were full.

The Mid-Norfolk Railway Preservation Trust

It was only around 1995 that The Mid-Norfolk Railway Preservation Trust started to restore this line between Dereham and Wymondham. It now has 17.5 miles of track (11.5 miles is in use) which when its is all in use, will be one of longer preserved railways in the UK. A lot of the other preserved railways had already had a twenty year start when they started.
