Class 73 206 was 73 123.

Class 73s were not normally seen in BR days at Peterborough as they were made for the 650-750 volt DC third rail network in southern England. They ran for most of there time taking power from the third rail, but they have a small by railway standards 600hp diesel engine to generate power for the traction motors, when no third rail is available. This made them very useful for cross London freights between freight yards and when the power was turned off.

49 of what is now class 73 locomotives, were built in two lots. 6 locomotives of Class JA being built in 1962 at the British Railways Eastleigh Works. They were numbered E6001 to E6006. Under the TOPS renumbering, these first 6 locomotives were to be given class 72, to mark them out from the second batch. In the end they became class 73/0 with the numbers 73101 to 73006.

The 2nd batch Class JB, were built by The Vulcan Foundry from 1965 to 1967. These were numbered as E6007 to E6049. Under the TOPS renumbering they became 73/1 with the numbers 73101 to 73142. One of this 2nd batch never got a TOPS number, this was E6027, it had been involved in an accident and had been withdrawn.

The Nene Valley Railway now (2014) runs from Peterborough to Wansford railway station and then on to Yarwell junction. Wansford Station is on part of the old A1 at Stibbingson and is about 2 miles from the village of Wansford itself. The line is about 7 1/2 miles long. It now has the Fletton Branch which is about another mile and a bit.

This website is Ukrailways1970tilltoday.me.uk  it is a webe site on railways, but it is not just on trains, but all things railways, with photos, which I have taken from the 1970s till now. I take photos of all things railways, steam diesel and electric trains,  and signal boxes any thing that is on the National Rail network, which was BR when I started taken photos ot heritage railways.

Today EWS, East Coast, Central trains and EWS are just some of the names on the trains. The name on the train does not mean, thats whos train it is these days. These names keep changing, but that means I have to keep taking photos. I also take photos of preserved railways with steam diesel and electric trains. There is lots more to add and I keep taking More!
