Platform 5

Platform 5 at Peterborough station has kept its platform number. It now has a lift shared with platform 4. It has an extra bit of platform at the northern end. Both ends of the platform have lost there platform ramps and now have a fence with a gate.

Platform 5 can be used by both up and down Norwich Cambridge and Birmingham Nottingham and Liverpool trains. Most of these now use the new platforms 6 and 7. Freight and light engines also use platforms 5 both ways.

Some East Coast down trains also used platform four in 2014.

Platform 5 is on the outer western edge of a island platform with on the eastern edge Platform 4. The buildings on this island platform are of the style of architecture prevalent in the 1960's and 1970's bland and and insipid. But clean and just about fit for there use.

Platforms 5 and 4 are linked to the main station by a long foot bridge over the two fast lines. This footbridge was made longer when the new lines went in. There is at long last a lift that opened in 2014

There is also the old Post office bridge that was out of bounds in BR days, but was then used for many years for push chairs and the yellow mobility truck that carried wheelchairs and old people over the tracks who could not use the stairs. Peterborough station had no lifts, right to up till 2014! The bridge is still in use. This old Post office bridge now can be used by any passengers at the north end of the platforms

At long last Peterborough railway station has some, New platforms. These were needed for when it all goes pear shape, there are just not enough platforms to go round. Even with all going well trains often had to wait for a platform on the river Nene railway bridge.

On Tuesday 13th December 2011 Network Rail announced a 43 million pound upgrade of Peterborough railway station starting in April 2012 and to be completed by December 2013. ( There was still ongoing work  in Feruary 214 and it was to be April 2014 be for it was all done)

This work has now increased the numer of platforms to 7 and includes new lifts to each platform. There were no lifts to any platform at Peterborough be for.

The New Layout at Peterborough station has seen: The old bay (platform1) removed. Platform 2 renumber as platform 1 and made longer. Platform 3 renumbered as platform 2 and also made longer. The all New Platform 3 is next to the up fast line, built on waste land. Platform 4 and 5 remain as they were, but hve been made a little longer. Platform 6 and 7 are an all new Island platform.  A new goods avioding line has also been built along side platform 7. Most platforms are signaled both ways with new signals on some of the platforms.

This website is Ukrailways1970tilltoday.me.uk  it is on railways, but it is not just on trains, but all things railways, with photos, which I have taken from the 1970s till now. I take photos of all things railways, steam diesel and electric trains, signal boxes, wagons any thing that is on the National Rail network, which was BR when I started taken photos.

Today EWS, East Coast, Central trains and EWS are just some of the names on the trains. The name on the train does not mean, thats whos train it is these days. These names keep changing, but that means I have to keep taking photos. I also take photos of preserved railways with steam diesel and electric trains. There is lots more to add and I keep taking More!
