The LNER A4 steam locomotive was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley . 4468 Mallard is a 4-6-2 steam locomotive, which was built at these very same Doncaster Works in 1937. Mallard still holds the World speed record for a steam locomotive at 125.88 miles per hour. This was done down the Stoke Bank, on the 3rd of June in 1938. Stoke bank is on the ECML between Grantham and Peterborough . Mallard is a NRM engine and is the star exhibit in the  Railway Museum at York.
 
In 2013 it has took part in the Great Gathering at the NRM in York of six A4s.

A4 60009  Union of South Africa at the Open day at Doncaster.
 
This A4 is 60009 Union of South Africa. It was built at Doncaster by the LNER in 1938. It was purchased in 1966 from BR, by John Cameron.
 
In the 1980s it was renamed Osprey for number of years. This was the name it was going to called, be for some one (at the LNER?),  decided to call it after The Union South Africa. The name was changed back to Union of South Africa in the early 1990s, with the end of apartheid. Union of South Africa has been one of the top Main Line steam locomotives. It is always in top order.
 
In 2013 it also took part in the Great Gathering at the NRM in York as one of of the six A4s.

This LNER V2 class 2-6-2 was was built in June 1936 with the number 4771 for the LNER at these Doncaster works were it is on display.
 
Green Arrow is a NRM locomotive which was used on the main line, and also went round to steam railways. Today it is now a static locomotive on display at the NRM.

Great Northern Railway Small Boiler Class C1 4-4-2 or Atlantic type. This locomotive is named Henry Oakley after the general manager of the GNR

London and North Eastern Railway D49 Class 4-4-0 was designed by Nigel Gresley. D 49's were named after fox hunts and shires.

The Plant
 
Doncaster's Great Northern Railway railway works was called The Plant. It was established by the Great Northern Railway in 1853. This railway works is (or what is left of it now ) next to the station on the west or down side of the station. LNER A3s and A4s were just two of the many classes of steam engines that came out of these works.
 
Doncaster Railway station
 
Doncaster railway station is in South Yorkshire and it is 156 miles from London Kings Cross. Doncaster station is now (2019) managed by LNER. Doncaster station is on of the East Coast Main Line (ECML).  Doncaster is one of the main railway stations on the ECML.
 
Doncaster station has eight platforms on two islands platforms. Platforms one three and four and eight are through platforms. Platforms six and seven are bays at the north of the station on the down side. Platform two and five are south-facing bays on the up side. It now has another (new) platform with the number 0 on the up side at the norther end.
 
There is a good mixture of train operators who now run thier services to from and though Doncaster station. LNER now( 2019) runs the main ECML trains replacing Virgin East Coast  East Coast and NXEC and GNER be for them . First Hull Trains also run there trains though Hull to London. Cross Country and Northern Rail trains together with First TransPennine Express and East Midlands Trains also use this station
