King's Cross station opened in 1852. Its on the Euston Road at the juction with York Way. Its is in the district of Kings Cross the London Borough of Camden in London.

 

Kings Cross station is just to the east of St Pancras station, which is now the terminus for international Eurostar trains using High speed One which crosses the ECML just to the north of Kings Cross.

 

King's Cross and St. Pancras station now share the Kings Cross London Underground station which is under and between them both.

Kings Cross station is one of the main London stations. The station is in the North of London. Trains run from here to the North East via the East Coast Main Line (ECML) to towns like Huntingdon and Peterborough. Then on to Grantham and Newark, Doncaster, York and Durham to Newcastle. Then into Scotland to Edinburgh were trains can go to rest of Scotland including Glasgow and Aberdeen.

 

From 1852 The Great Northern Railway (GNR) ran its trains from Kings Cross.

 

The London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) was next from 1922 till 1948.

 

British Railways (BR) ran its trains from Kings Cross from 1948 till 1996 when the newly privatised railways took over.

 

Great North Eastern Railway Ltd (GNER) and West Anglia Great Northern (WAGN) with later open operator Hull Trains ran the trains for the first years of the newly privatised railways.

 

First Capital Connect took over from the WAGN franchised with the local and commuter trains up the ECML to Huntingdon and Peterborough and to Cambridge and then on to Kings Lynn.

 

Open Access operator Hull Trains also runs it trains to Hull from here as does another  Open Access operator Grand Central with it service to Sunderland.

 

Great North Eastern Railway Ltd (GNER) regained it Franchisee but then lost it again. National Express East Coast (NXEC) taking it over from GNER in late 2007.

On 14th November 2009 East Coast a new operating company took over the running of the ECML train services that had been run by National Express East Coast.

 

National Express had been running National Express East Coast as a subsidiary company of its main company. National Express decided it was cheaper to walk away from the franchise, than keep it.

 

East Coast is the trading name of East Coast Main Line Company Ltd which is a subsidiary of Directly Operated Railways Limited. This was was formed by the Department for Transport. It may re-tender the franchise some time but with GNER and NXEC both not making any money with ECML trains would any one else want it?

 

 

In 2015 Virgin East Coast has taken over the franchise.

 

Kings Cross has in the last few years had a face lift with lots of work to tidy up the station.
