The LNER B1 class was designed by Edward Thompson and was introduced from 1942. number 8301 was the first engine and it was named Springbok with 18 more being named after antilopes and 18 more were named after LNER directers.
Only 10 locomotives of this class were built during the war, but orders were then placed with the Vulcan Foundry and the North British Locomotive Company to get things moving. The rest were built at Darington. 274 B1s were built between 1942 and 1947 in LNER days and 136 B1s were built between 1948 and 1953 under BR.
This LNER B1 class locomotive is named Mayflower. This locomotive has now left the Nene Valley.
It was in September 2014 based at the North Norfolk Railway, with a new owner.It is now on the mainline in 2019
