Grand Central normally run their trains though York on their London to Sunderland service. But at this time in 2008 not all the HSTs were running. HSTs were only running between London and York. The set sitting in the bay platform at York above is about to go to London.

The York to Sunderland service was being run with hired in Class 47s at this time. This was a short time fix and when all the HSTs were back the hireling of the 47s stopped.

Grand Central is an open access Operator. It began to run its trains in December 2007.You will note that the HST have unlike other HSTs buffers. The HSTs power cars were the ones used during driver training and testing for the electirfication of the ECML. The engines in these HSTs were the Valenta which were in rather a poor state and have now have been changed to new MTU engines like East Coast.

Grand Central now use Class 180s  (2020) which look very smart in ther black colours.
