Winter Steam Gala  29th January 2011

Holding a Steam Gala in January is always going to be cold. 2011 was not warm, but for January the weather was very good.  There was a good mixture of locomotives, and it was a good day out.

Nigel Gresley designed the K4 for the London and North Eastern railway (LNER). The K4 2-6-0 steam locomotives was designed to work on the steep grades of West Highland line. 61994 is named The Great Marquest. This locomotive was built in July 1938 at Darlington by the LNER. 61994 operates special trains on the national rail network and is of course at home on the West Highland line. The Great Marquests is the only K4 that has survived into preservation.
