March Railway Station in BR days
Class 31251 on a freight of 16 ton mineral wagons
A DMU gets the signal to come out of the now disused GN&GEJR platform 1 at March railway station. These platforms were used for passenger trains from the joint line to Spalding and Sleaford and Lincoln.
DMU to Cambridge in the now closed platform 1 at March in BR days.
Today's platforms 1 and 2 at March station were the old platforms 3 and 4. This train in the old platform 1. This Lincoln to Cambridge train was sometimes booked to stop at March for about 20mins. This train also stopped at Spalding for about 15mins. One of reasons why the March to Spalding line closed is that this train could do it in nearly the same time byway of Peterborough.
When the train was rerouted round via Peterborough it only stopped for 2mins at Peterborough and Spalding and 2mins at March. These shorten stops saved 29 mins! Today East Midland Trains units only run from Lincoln to Peterborough and you then have to then change trains at Peterborough and go over the footbridge to get a train to Cambridge.

These pages in this part are on March in the 1970s which still had lots of freight from the then still large Whitemoor yard
