Melton Mowbray station is on the line from Syston Junction to Peterborough. It had been many years since Melton had a direct train to London without changing at trains at Leicester or Peterborough, when these trains were re-started.

Most Freight heading to Syston comes from the Peterborough line but freight also comes by way of Melton to and from the line to Corby and Kettering which joints the Peterborough line at Manton junction which is between Oakham and Stamford
Freight trains sometimes use the line Corby line to miss out Leicester. When the Corby steel works was open it used to make lots of traffic for this line with iron ore in and and finished steel trains out. There is only a odd steel coil train from Corby now. Nothing is now left of the once huge steel making works at Corby.
