Helpston BR: Gate box on Maxey Road
GNR gate box at Helpston in the 1970s
This gate box was removed when the signals were upgraded ready for the overhead wires. CTV from Helpston signal box now controls the barriers at this level crossing on the Maxey Road. Note how the road goes up and down because of the cant on ECML here, making it a bit of roller coaster. Note also the posts to keep traffic on the road.
The Midland Railways line from Peterborough to Stamford is in the foreground. The road goes over both sets of lines. The Midland Railways also had a small crossing keepers cabin (signal box) here which is now at Orton Mere station on The Nene Valley Railway. That box was removed from here in 1974.
