Ashwell is a small village and is between Melton Mowbray and Oakham. The level crossing now has barriers and still has a signal box . There were sidings here when the branch to Cottesmore for iron stone quarrys were open. This branch line closed in in 1973.

This box is still in use in 2014.  The signal box like all the other boxes on Peterborough to Leicester railway line will close around 2017
