'Holme Lode level crossing and house'

Holme Lode level crosing 2014

Holme Lode  level crossing with its lifting barriers and the overhead wires in 2014

This crossing is just to north of Holme village which has barriers now. This small B road has to go up to the railway and then down on the other side as the land here has sunk as the peat has dried out.

The railway is now on a embankment but this is still below sea level. The land on this Fen is some, if not the the lowest in England.

The over head wires posts here have adjustment on each post for height as in very wet or very dry weather the land around here under the railway can move up or down.

This crossing used to have level crossing gates with some one having to open them. A gate house was here for the gate man or often a railway workers wife, who would open and close the gates, living in the gate house for a low rent. For a number of years here a small garden shed about 6x4ft was used here for a gates man. The gate house was rented out and fell into disrepair.

Note the road has to go up to cross the railway the ground has sunk about 13ft over the years and the railway has had ballast added over the years to keep it level.

This fine Great Northern gate house at Holme Fen was pulled down after being left to decay for many years. It may only have been a few feet from the ECML, but must be classed as one that got away! We have saved a lot of engines and wagons but lots of things have been lost, like this building.

In the fens when trains go by the gound shakes. This building was only about six foot away from a main line railway

Network Rail Main Line Level Crossing Closures Feasiblity Study Community Consultation booklet (2014)  says this crossing is one they would would like to close along with the main Holme level crossing and Connington level crossing and Yaxley foot crossing along this part of the East Coast Main line.

On Saturday 27th of March 2004 A B1 ran from Cleethorpes to Kings Cross. The trip was run by 'THE RAILWAY TOURING COMPANY'. The trip was named 'THE LONDONER'. The locomotive was B1 61264.

The trip had started from Cleethorpes at around 7am and had picked up passengers at Grimsby and Barnetby, Scunthorpe and Crowle.  At Doncaster it joined the East Coast Main Line.

The train then came down the ECML to Peterborough were it had a water stop. After stopping in Westwood yard for water, the train came by Holme about 11am.

Railways at Holme

Holme is a small village next to the ECML between Peterborough and Huntingdon and it is spelt with a L. Holme village is in the Huntingdonshire district of Cambridgeshire.

Holme had its own railway station and a branch line to Ramsey. Both the station and the branch line are now closed. Yaxley village and Peterborough are to the north and Connington crossing is to the south (about a mile from the village).

The land in fens around Holme is black fen peat and is some of the lowest and best farming land in England. The track was laid on reed and wooden rafts and has not sunk like the land around.

The ECML is now on a embankment. It was level with the land when it was built. They may have kept adding soil or ballast to kept the track level over the years.

The level crossing in the Holme village has a gate box that was a replacement when the old signal boxe went. Holme vilage is to on the west of this crossing.

Conington Airfield or as it is now called Peterborough Business Airport is between Holme vilage and Conington.

To the south of Holme village is a level crossing at Conington. Most mainline steam heading north stop on the down slow between Holme and Conington crossings to top up with water from a water tanker, as there are now no water cranes now on the ECML

To the north is a level crossing at Holme fen which is about a 3/4 of a mile north towards Peterborough and is on a very minor road

Next station south is Huntingdon    Next station north is Peterborough
