Grantham station is on the ECML from Kings Cross to the north  and Scotland. Peterborough is to the south and Newark to the North. Kings Cross to Leeds trains are the most common trains to stop here on the main linein 2013. Nottingham to the west and Sleaford  and Skegness to the east.

GNER who ran the main ECML trains in 2004, do not now operate these trains. National Express East Coast took over till it lost its franchise. East Coast then ran these trains, then Virgin, who gave up its franchise. Now its LNER, all with the same rolling stock up to 2019.

East Coast ran the ECML passenger trains from London to Leeds and Scotland in 2013. Some trains stopped at Grantham, but many went though without stopping.

East Coast was a subsidiary of Directly Operated Railways. This was created by the Department for Transport (goverment) as an railway operator of last resort. This came after National Express East Coast (NXEC) walked away from this ECML franchise.

Trains from Skegness  Sleaford to Nottingham which call at Grantham now go under the ECML and A1 be for they use a new cord and turn back at Allington Junction towards Grantham on the Nottingham line. These trains used Barkston Junction be for. This has helped timekeeping, as these trains do not have to wait for a path on the ECML as they now do not use it.

These trains come into the bay at the North of the station and then reverse out back to Allington Junction to continue on there journey.
