East Midland Trains class 153310 on a train to Lincoln from Peterborough on the 5th of May 2014
Sleaford railway station in the 2014 still looked much as it did in LNER days a part from the signals and steam. There is a lack of station staft when the booking office is not open. In the 1980s and 1990s Sleaford station and the joint line from Spalding to Lincoln was slowly being left to die. The removal of station buildings with bus shelters, never did happen at Sleaford station.
Things are looking up as the Sleaford avoiding line has being reopened. The signal boxes and level crossing gates along the line from Peterborough to Spalding are being replaced with remote operated barriers from the York signaling centre in the years to come. Sleaford north signal box and its level crossing gates have already been replaced in 2014. The box was still standing in early May 2014 but for how much longer.
East Midland Trains class 156415 comes into Sleaford station on the 5th of May 2014 with a train from Npttingham to Skegness.
Note the weeds
Sleaford station is on the Nottingham
to Skegness line which runs west to east. Trains on the Peterborough
line also use this station that runs north to south. The Spalding trains come off the GN&GE line at Sleaford south juction and join the Skegness line at Sleaford East juction just to the east of the station. To get get back on the Lincoln line trains travel west to Sleaford west juction and then rejoin the Lincoln line at Sleaford North juction.
There is an avoiding line east of the town that let trains from Spalding to Lincoln bypass Sleaford. This went out of use for a number of years and all Spalding Lincoln freight trains had to come though the station. This avoiding line was never pulled up and one line has now been reopened, so that some of the freight trains off the ECML can use this to open up more paths between Peterborough and Doncaster on the ECML.
