GNER train to London coming into platform 2 at Peterborough in 2004

Platform 2 at Peterborough is the main up platform for the London main line trains. In LNER and British Railway days there was no fast though lines and nearly all up trains used this platform. it had a 20mph dog leg at the end of the platform which has now been straightened out. Up freight trains had to wait for a space between passenger trains,  nearly all up had to to all use platform 2. 9Fs on long coal trains would come though the station.

The main ticket office and shop and Buffet are on all platform 2. In the old GNR station there was a parcel office as well.

GNER 3311 is in platform two with a WAGN EMU 365519 in platform 3

In 2004 GNER 3311 is in platform two with a train to London. A  WAGN EMU 365519 is in platform 3.

GNER 3311 was one of the 377/2 trainsets which were on lease from Eurostar but had not been repainted in GNER colours. These Eurostar 373/2 trainsets were used on the White Rose service between Kings Cross and Leeds.

This platform has become platform 1 from 2014
Platform 2 at Peterborough was used for all the main up trains to London. Up BR trains nearly always uses this platform as it was best platform for passengers with just a small walk from the booking office to the platform.

There was a 20 mile an hour speed restriction though platform 2 in steam days because platform 2 had a dogleg at the London end that could have been taken out after the Crescent Bridge was built. The Second World War put paid to that.

It was to be 1972/3s be for platform 2 was straighten out when the station was altered and the two though lines put in though the middle of the station.

Before 1968 when the station was altered when the fast lines put in, platform 2 saw most up trains including freight using this platform, as the trip around the rear of the station involved stopping all trains and needed much planing between a number of signal boxes.

All platforms at Peterborough after the station was altered were signalled both ways so up though trains not stopping at Peterborough do not not now have to use platform 2.

The bay platform that was numbered one, had its track removed in late 2013 ,as part of a new platform layout at Peterborough station. Because of this Platform 2 will in 2014 become platform 1.

This website is  it is on railways, but it is not just on trains, but all things railways, with photos, which I have taken from the 1970s till now. I take photos of all things railways, steam diesel and electric trains, signal boxes, wagons any thing that is on the National Rail network, which was BR when I started taken photos.

Today EWS, East Coast, Central trains and EWS are just some of the names on the trains. The name on the train does not mean, thats whos train it is these days. These names keep changing, but that means I have to keep taking photos. I also take photos of preserved railways with steam diesel and electric trains. There is lots more to add and I keep taking More!
